Pig Farming

Pig Farming

Pig farming is a highly profitable enterprise in Uganda, thanks to the increasing demand for pork. At Elgona Farm, we provide training and support for farmers looking to raise pigs efficiently, focusing on modern, sustainable farming practices that maximize output while maintaining animal welfare.
Pig Breeds & Selection

Pig Breeds & Selection

Choosing the right pig breed is crucial to the success of your pig farming venture. Our program covers:

  • Breed Selection: We guide farmers in selecting the best breeds based on climate, market demands, and desired production outcomes. Popular breeds include Landrace, Large White, and Duroc. These breeds are known for their fast growth rates and high-quality meat.
  • Stocking: Learn the correct stocking methods to avoid overcrowding and ensure healthy growth. We teach best practices for introducing new pigs into the farm to minimize stress and disease spread.

    Housing & Space Management

Proper housing is essential for maintaining pig health and growth. Our training includes:

    • Pigpen Design: Learn how to construct well-ventilated, clean, and efficient pig housing that meets the needs of different stages of production, from farrowing to finishing.
    • Space Requirements: We train farmers on the ideal space per pig, ensuring they have enough room to move freely without overcrowding, which reduces stress and increases growth.
    • Waste Management: Learn sustainable waste management techniques that keep the farm clean, reduce the risk of disease, and can even be turned into profit through biogas production or organic fertilizer.

Feeding & Nutrition

Proper nutrition is key to raising healthy, fast-growing pigs. Our program covers:

  • Feeding Plans: We provide feeding schedules for different stages of pig growth, from piglets to fully grown sows and boars. This includes a balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Formulating Local Feeds: Farmers can learn how to reduce feed costs by formulating their own pig feed using locally sourced ingredients while ensuring that the pigs’ nutritional needs are met.
  • Watering Systems: Ensuring pigs have constant access to clean water is vital for their health. We train farmers on setting up efficient watering systems that meet these needs.

Breeding & Hatchery Management

Health Management & Disease Control

Keeping pigs healthy and disease-free is vital for farm success. Our training includes:

  • Disease Prevention: Learn biosecurity measures, including vaccination schedules and sanitation practices, to prevent the outbreak of common diseases such as swine fever and pneumonia.
  • Parasite Control: Regular deworming and parasite management ensure your pigs grow healthily and maintain high productivity.
  • Veterinary Care: We teach farmers how to identify signs of illness and when to involve a veterinarian. We also provide information on first aid for common pig diseases and injuries.

Breeding & Reproduction

A successful pig farming venture relies on effective breeding programs. Our training includes:

  • Breeding Management: Learn about optimal breeding ages, pig gestation periods, and farrowing management. We also teach techniques for increasing litter sizes and ensuring high survival rates for piglets.
  • Artificial Insemination: For farmers looking to improve their breeding efficiency, we provide training on artificial insemination, helping you to reduce costs and improve the genetics of your herd.

Harvesting & Marketing

Pigs can be harvested for both pork and breeding stock. Our program covers:

  • Proper Harvesting Techniques: Learn the best time to slaughter pigs for optimal meat quality and weight.
  • Processing and Value Addition: We train farmers on processing pork and adding value through smoked, cured, or packaged products.
  • Marketing Strategies: We help connect farmers to local pork markets, butcheries, restaurants, and export opportunities. Learn how to position your pork products to command higher prices.

Who Should Join:

This program is ideal for new or experienced farmers who want to start or scale their pig farming operations, increase productivity, and gain access to lucrative markets for pork and breeding pigs.
