Poultry Farming

Poultry Farming

At Elgona Farm, poultry farming is at the core of our white meat value chain program. Our Chicken Farming for Meat and Eggs initiative focuses on providing farmers with the knowledge, tools, and resources to raise chickens sustainably and profitably. Chicken farming offers significant opportunities for farmers due to the high demand for both eggs and chicken meat in local and international markets.
Chicken Breeds & Selection

Chicken Breeds & Selection

Choosing the right breed is crucial for successful poultry farming. Our training helps farmers:

  • Select High-Quality Breeds: We guide farmers in selecting the most productive breeds for both meat (broilers) and eggs (layers). Popular breeds we recommend include:
    • Broilers: Fast-growing breeds like Cobb 500 and Ross 308 for meat production.
    • Layers: Reliable egg-laying breeds such as Isa Brown, Leghorn, and Rhode Island Red.
  • Hybrid Chickens: We also offer training on hybrid chickens that are efficient for both meat and egg production, depending on the farmer’s market demand.

Housing & Space Management

Proper housing is essential for chicken health, growth, and productivity. Our program covers:

  • Poultry Housing Design: Farmers learn how to design, construct, and manage cost-effective poultry houses, ensuring proper ventilation, lighting, and protection from predators. We emphasize creating spaces that are easy to clean and maintain.
  • Free-Range vs. Intensive Systems: We educate farmers on different housing systems, including:
    • Free-Range: Allows chickens to roam and forage in a natural environment, resulting in healthier birds and higher-quality meat and eggs.
    • Intensive Systems: Controlled environments where chickens are housed in enclosed spaces, with regulated feeding and watering systems, ideal for large-scale farming.
  • Perch and Nesting Box Design: For layers, we train farmers on setting up effective nesting areas to increase egg production and minimize egg breakage.

Breeding & Hatchery Management

Breeding plays a key role in maintaining a productive poultry flock. Our training includes:

  • Hatchery Management: We provide guidance on setting up small-scale hatcheries, allowing farmers to breed their own chickens. This reduces costs and ensures a continuous supply of chicks.
  • Natural vs. Artificial Breeding: Farmers are trained on both natural and artificial methods of breeding, including the use of incubators for artificial hatching.
  • Egg Selection and Care: For layers, we cover how to properly select and handle eggs to ensure high hatchability and minimal losses

Egg Production Management (Layers)

For farmers focused on egg production, our training covers:

  • Optimizing Egg Production: We teach techniques to maximize egg production, including lighting programs, proper diet, and stress management.
  • Collecting and Storing Eggs: Learn how to collect eggs regularly, handle them carefully, and store them in optimal conditions to maintain freshness and quality.
  • Egg Grading and Packaging: We also cover egg grading (based on size, weight, and shell quality) and best practices for packaging eggs for sale in both local and export markets.

Egg Production Management (Layers)

Meat Production Management (Broilers)

For those raising broilers, the goal is to produce healthy chickens that grow quickly and efficiently. Our program covers:

  • Growth Monitoring: Learn to monitor the growth of broilers to ensure they reach market weight (typically 2-2.5 kg) in 6-8 weeks. We teach farmers to track feed consumption, weight gain, and overall health.
  • Optimizing Feed for Fast Growth: By using specific feeding formulas at each growth stage, we help farmers maximize feed conversion efficiency, resulting in larger birds with lower feed costs.
  • Humane Harvesting & Processing: We train farmers on the best practices for humane harvesting, slaughtering, and processing of broilers to ensure high-quality meat. We also cover value-added processes, such as cleaning, packaging, and freezing for sale.

Waste Management & Sustainability

Poultry farming produces a significant amount of waste, which can be managed sustainably. Our program includes:

  • Manure Management: We teach farmers how to collect and process chicken manure into organic fertilizer, which can be used on crops or sold to other farmers.
  • Water Conservation: Learn water-saving techniques, including efficient watering systems like nipple drinkers, which reduce water wastage while keeping the chickens hydrated and healthy.
  • Recycling and Renewable Energy: For larger-scale operations, we provide insights on how to turn poultry waste into biogas for energy production, further enhancing farm sustainability.

Harvesting & Marketing

The end goal for poultry farming is selling high-quality eggs or meat. Our program provides support for:

  • Optimal Harvesting Time: For broilers, we train farmers on the best time to harvest chickens for maximum profitability, ensuring they reach the desired weight and meat quality.
  • Value Addition: Learn how to add value to your poultry products by processing, packaging, and branding eggs or meat. We also cover techniques for producing and marketing by-products like feather meal or bone meal.
  • Market Access: We connect farmers with local markets, supermarkets, restaurants, and export opportunities. Farmers learn how to negotiate better prices, build brand recognition, and consistently meet market demand.

Who Should Join:

This program is ideal for anyone interested in starting or expanding their chicken farming business, whether for meat or eggs. It is also suitable for those looking to scale up operations, improve efficiency, and gain access to profitable markets.
